PJM Interconnection

PJM Interconnection strengthens the reliability of its power grid with AVEVA PI System

PJM Interconnection coordinates the movement of wholesale electricity in all or parts of thirteen U.S. states and the District of Columbia. To ensure grid reliability, the organization needed to display the status and location of power lines in real time while integrating weather data, which meant combining geographic information with grid data and visualizing up to 1.6 million data points. Deploying AVEVA PI System made it possible to integrate Esri ArcGIS data into the system called DIMA. Dispatchers now have a unified map showing both line status and real-time weather radar. Operator situational awareness is significantly improved, and a color-coded display instantly flags the status of each line. The grid is more reliable, securing the power supply for millions of consumers every day.

Objectives

  • View real-time grid, weather, and geospatial data using ESRI ArcGIS.
  • Develop the Dispatch Interactive Map (DIMA) application to display this data in a single system.

Solutions

  • AVEVA PI System

Results

  • DIMA improves situational awareness for dispatchers.
  • The color-coded display shows the status of the lines in real time.

Testimonials

"That's what dispatchers have wanted to do for a very long time."

FAQ

How does AVEVA PI System help visualize a power grid in real time?
AVEVA PI System enables PJM Interconnection to aggregate up to 1.6 million grid data points in real time. Integrated with Esri ArcGIS geographic data, it powers the DIMA (Dispatch Interactive Map) application, which displays line status and weather conditions simultaneously. This unified view enables dispatchers to make informed decisions across the entire grid, which covers 13 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.
Why combine geographic data and power grid data?
Geography directly affects the stability of a power grid: local weather, topographical constraints and climate events. PJM Interconnection used AVEVA PI System to combine operational grid data with geospatial information from Esri ArcGIS. This integration gives dispatchers a unified map showing the real-time status of lines and the weather radar, transforming situational awareness and the ability to anticipate incidents.
How can the situational awareness of power dispatchers be improved?
AVEVA PI System gives PJM dispatchers a unified, color-coded view of grid status, allowing them to instantly identify lines on alert. Overlaying weather radar anticipates climate constraints on generation and distribution. This improved situational awareness secures the critical decisions made in the control room, which are particularly essential in an environment where every second counts for grid stability and supplying consumers.
What role does real-time data play in power grid stability?
Managing a regional power grid requires millisecond-level control. AVEVA PI System collects, contextualizes and delivers real-time data from lines, substations and weather sensors. For PJM Interconnection, this data management infrastructure is the foundation that makes the DIMA interactive dispatch possible. It is an emblematic example of the strategic value of real-time data in the energy transition, where the variability of renewable sources increases the complexity of grid control.
How can 1.6 million information points be visualized on a single map?
AVEVA PI System handles the volume and frequency of data needed to display 1.6 million information points from the PJM grid in real time. Combined with Esri ArcGIS, it makes this mass of data visually usable through color coding, dynamic aggregations and smooth map navigation. This ability to turn industrial big data into actionable information is what distinguishes data management platforms designed for critical environments such as power transmission.
