Ence brings together three complementary businesses: forest manager on the Iberian Peninsula, Europe's leading producer of eucalyptus pulp and Spain's leading biomass-based power producer, thus forming its own circular economy. Process variability hampered energy efficiency, water shortages caused operational shutdowns, and the reactive approach to maintenance could no longer keep pace with increasingly frequent environmental deviations. An in-house team was formed to develop new tools based on
AVEVA PI System, AVEVA PI Server, AVEVA PI Vision,
AVEVA CONNECT and EcoStruxure Advanced Process Control, making full use of event frames, notifications and Asset Framework. The benefits are remarkable: a 15% reduction in emissions and 1,500 MWh saved per pulp mill as part of a comprehensive
energy optimization approach, summer shutdowns due to water shortages reduced from 15 days to zero, €150,000 in annual savings on biomass consumption, and a 10% drop in emissions from the biomass power plant, supporting Ence's environmental ambitions over the long term.
